Employment Standard Changes Summer-y

The morning air is a cool, leaves are starting to collect on the ground and kids have started back to school. Sure, we’ll all wait at least a couple more weeks until we retire our patio furniture pillows to the basement for storage, but it’s hard to deny…summer is over.

That being said – in the HR world, it’s was a very busy summer! While we were all off living the lake life a significant update to Alberta’s Employment Standards Code and Labour Relations Code was passed on July 18th, 2019! Intended to support Alberta employers in managing workforce costs and “make Alberta open for business”, Bill 2’s changes impact:

  • Student & Youth Minimum Wage Regulations
  • General Holiday Pay Entitlement
  • Employee Overtime Calculations
  • Alberta Labour Relations Code

To address the passing of Bill 2, Salopek & Associates hosted a full house Breakfast Session last week, attended by Calgary HR and business professionals eager to better understand these changes and the impact they will have on their business and employees. With changes already in effect, it is important for organizations to understand the new legislation and implement it properly in order to maximize the benefits and ensure staff aren’t disgruntled as changes are made.

Our Breakfast Session also reviewed HR Trends & Hot Topics for 2019 including important information regarding:

  • Cannabis Updates
  • Managing Dynamics of an Aging Workforce
  • The Next Workforce Generation

If you missed our Breakfast Session but are feeling out of the loop heading into fall, be sure to contact Salopek to schedule a meeting so we can update you with details on the important workplace changes now in effect for Alberta businesses. Together we can develop a plan that will maximize the benefits of these changes for your organization while supporting your people.

We look forward to catching up with you!
