My Path to Human Resources & Joining the Salopek Team!

Hello and welcome to my very first blog post! My name is Zoe Dzenick, and I started with Salopek & Associates as a Human Resources Assistant and Office Administrative Assistant in mid-May of this year.

Relocating to Calgary from my hometown of St. Albert in September of 2017 was both nerve-wracking and exhilarating (not unlike many other major life decisions one makes). Lots of questions raced through my head, how am I going to meet people? What if I can’t find work? What if it is too hard to be away from my family and friends? My list of doubts appeared endless at the time, and yet here I am, sitting in the elegant Salopek & Associates office, simultaneously sighing in relief and buzzing with excitement.

I am often asked why I chose a career in human resources, and I find that I am frequently discovering new reasons. Here are a few that I am certain of:

  • I like to wear different hats; having the ability to collaborate with various departments within an organization, which leads to a lot of variety in one’s day, is something I find very appealing.

  • I like to focus on the big picture; spending my time planning for the future, and in turn being proactive instead of reactive, has always been an element I knew would be fundamental for me in any career choice.

  • I like to have a positive impact on others; helping others reach their own goals and creating a strong, working support system is something I not only value in my personal life, but in my work environment as well.

It is surreal to me how perfectly this aligns with Salopek & Associates, and I consider myself very lucky to contribute to an organization where I get to learn from the best-of-the-best, challenge myself, and be surrounded by like-minded, passionate people who value relationships, and integrity as much as I do.

I am a strong believer in the saying ‘work hard, play hard’, and can attest to the fact that enjoying life outside of work creates an essential balance. If you are wondering what exciting things I do in my free-time to create this balance, you may be disappointed to learn that I am no skydiver, lion tamer, or UFC fighter. I do however enjoy volunteering, taking advantage of mountainous activities such as snowboarding and hiking, travelling as much as possible, and expressing myself creatively through drawing and painting. I may not be the ultimate thrill seeker, but I make up for it with my metaphorical appetite for life, and my literal appetite for Italian cuisine.

I am so excited to be a part of the Salopek & Associates team, and cannot wait to see what the future holds!
